The metal trunk was offering more resistance than originally thought. We’d mused that a squirt of WD40 into the locks was all that would be needed.

Mmm, not so – in fact with much huffing and puffing we fiddled around with various sized flat head screwdrivers, pushing against the locking mechanism at every which angle. Gosh this was getting ridiculous.

Dad had religiously kept his will, his birth certificate and every other important piece of paper, safe in this fire resistant box, which was stubbornly proving impervious to us too. Then, when we heard the click and excitedly threw back the lid, the emptiness swept over us in a tsunami of disappointment.
