Flowers In The Window – (Song Lyric Sunday)
I love this song by Travis – the video is such a happy place too. I was first introduced the their music when their second album The Man Who was released in 1999. We were drowning in debt at work and it was a particularly difficulty time, resulting in the closure of the business in 2000. The hit Why Does It Always Rain On Me – felt sardonically ironic.
However, this song was written long before the release of, The Man Who, yet included in the third album The Invisible Band and although he is uncredited on the album, it was co-written by Paul McCartney. In an interview for Rate Your Music, Healy claimed, “I met McCartney whilst recording a television programme, and I played him an unfinished track from the new album. He said: ‘That’s a great little song.’ He helped us finish the ending, but we didn’t give him a credit on the sleeve.”
During live performances of the song, it is typically dedicated to members of the band or stage crew who have reached a significant moment in a relationship. For example, during the 12 Memories tour in 2003, it was dedicated to the lighting manager who had just had a child. In 2007, whilst playing at the Hammersmith Apollo, it was dedicated to their touring pianist Klaus, who had become engaged the day before.

Just watch them smiling as they croon this … it makes you smile too.
When I first held you, I was cold
A melting snowman, I was told
But there was no one there to hold
Before I swore
That I would be alone for ever more
Wow, look at you now
Flowers in the window
It’s such a lovely day
And I’m glad you feel the same
‘Cause to stand up out in the crowd
You are one in a million
And I love you so
Let’s watch the flowers grow
There is no reason to feel bad
But there are many seasons to feel bad, sad, mad
It’s just a bunch of feelings that we have to hold
But I am here to help you with the load
Wow, look at you now
Flowers in the window
It’s such a lovely day
And I’m glad you feel the same
‘Cause to stand up out in the crowd
You are one in a million
And I love you so
Let’s watch the flowers grow
So now we’re here and now is fine
So far away from there
And there is time, time, time
To plant new seeds and watch them grow
So there’ll be flowers in the window when we go
Wow, look at us now
Flowers in the window
It’s such a lovely day
And I’m glad you feel the same
‘Cause to stand up out in the crowd
You are one in a million
And I love you so
Let’s watch the flowers grow
Ohh wow, look at you now
Flowers in the window
It’s such a lovely day
And I’m glad you feel the same
‘Cause to stand up out in the crowd
You are one in a million
And I love you so
Let’s watch the flowers grow
Let’s watch the flowers grow

I have the same feelings for Ocean Colour Scene and Yes – (different decades) as regular work journey companions. 😊
