The Long Road – (Song Lyric Sunday Prompt – Canada)

Before you press delete … This Canadian band has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide, has sold out Madison Square Garden and has been nominated for six Grammy awards, including “Album of the Year” and “Best Rock Album.” It even ranks as the second best-selling foreign act in the U.S. of the 2000s (behind The Beatles), and the eleventh best-selling music act of the decade overall. Not bad for the ‘most hated’ band on earth. Please do read on to find out why this album moves me?

According to an article in The Guardian listening to heavy metal, punk rock and other extreme music makes you calmer not angrier. “Results showed levels of hostility, irritability and stress decreased after music was introduced … The music helped them explore the full gamut of emotion they felt, but also left them feeling more active and inspired,” reads the study. “We found the music regulated sadness and enhanced positive emotions,” Sharman said. “When experiencing anger, extreme-music fans liked to listen to music that could match their anger.”

Nickleback’s The Long Road is one such album for me.  It accompanied me on many a road trip during 2009.  It was February that year when me and Mr McHarrie parted company.  It should have happened at least two years previously but for one reason or another we procrastinated over the inevitable.

All the tracks have a specific meaning for me, but for the purposes of Song Lyric Sunday, I have gone with “Feelin Way Too Damn Good”.  In the November, I embarked on a long distance relationship with Dave.  This tune captures all the lust and lows of a new love.

Feelin’ Way Too Damn Good

I missed you so much
That I begged you to fly here and see me
You must’ve broke down
‘Cause you finally said that you would
But now that you’re here
I just feel like I’m constantly dreaming
‘Cause something’s gotta go wrong
‘Cause I’m feelin’ way too damn good

For forty eight hours
I don’t think that we left my hotel room
Should show you the sites
‘Cause I’m sure that I said that I would
We gotta make love just one last time in the shower
Well something’s gotta go wrong
‘Cause I’m feelin’ way too damn good

And it’s like

Every time I turn around
I fall in love and find my heart face down
And where it lands is when it should
This time it’s like
The two of us should probably start to fight
‘Cause something’s gotta go wrong
‘Cause I’m feelin’ way too damn good…

Whilst I have chosen Feeling way too Damn Good – there really isn’t a single track that doesn’t have some deeper meaning for me in The Long Road – so if you want to put yourself through the ‘pain’ of the whole album you can find the play list here.

PS Ten years on, Dave and I are still going strong. Mr McHarrie lives in the house opposite us … weird as you like!

  1. Thanks for participating HiddenEdge. That is pretty cool to have a rock star living across the street from you. They do have a very angry sound, but that is mostly in the singing and this id the second Nickelback song that I listened to today.
