The Way We Were – (Song Lyric Sunday)
Well folks, it is Valentine’s Day and for me this song conjures up more memories than most. I am going to let you fill in the details, some of you may have picked up bits of the story from other Song Lyric Sunday posts. For those not so familiar, I live with my current partner in a house, directly opposite my second husband. He is a huge fan of the glorious Ms Streisand.
The Way We Were is a 1973 American romantic drama film directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford. Arthur Laurents wrote both the novel and screenplay based on his college days at Cornell University and his experiences with the House Un-American Activities Committee.
A box-office success, the film was nominated for several awards and won the Academy Awards for Best Original Dramatic Score and Best Original Song for the theme song “The Way We Were”. It ranked at number six on AFI’s 100 Years…100 Passions survey of the top 100 greatest love stories in American cinema. The Way We Were is considered one of the great romantic films.
Memories
Light the corners of my mind
Misty watercolor memories
Of the way we were
Scattered pictures
Of the smiles we left behind
Smiles we gave to one another
For the way we were
Can it be that it was all so simple then?
Or has time re-written every line?
If we had the chance to do it all again
Tell me, would we?
Could we?
Memories
May be beautiful and yet
What’s too painful to remember
We simply to choose to forget
So it’s the laughter
We will remember
Whenever we remember
The way we were
The way we were

Thanks for sharing this classic Barbara Streisand song Laura. It is hard to beat a movie that has Streisand and Robert Redford in it. This song became Streisand’s first #1 hit

I have quite a few of Barbara’s melodies in my Life’s memories. Fewer in more recent years … if I am honest.

I love the song, the movie, and Barbra!
I was a junior in high school when the movie debuted. I went to the theater to see it then wrote a review for my high school newspaper. I remember my high school counselor thanking me for that review. He took his wife to see it in their anniversary and they both loved it. So this has wonderful memories for me!
