Don’t Worry Be Happy – (Song Lyric Sunday)
Boyfriend has been looking at second hand camper-vans online – somewhat concerned at the £60k price mark!! So I’ve chosen Don’t Worry Be Happy for Song Lyric Sunday …

“Don’t Worry, Be Happy” is a song by American musician Bobby McFerrin released in 1988.
It was named by Village Voice critic Michael Musto as the worst of all time, and it topped Q100 DJ Bert Weiss’s list of tracks he would forever ban from radio. In the “50 Worst Songs Ever”, Blender said that “it’s difficult to think of a song more likely to plunge you into suicidal despondency than this”, and also lambasted its “appalling” lyrics.
Nevertheless, it was the first a cappella song to reach number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, which was a position it held for two weeks.
Kieran McCarthy of Allmusic considered the song to “probably remain prevalent in pop culture as long as humans speak English and play music.”
Robin Williams appears in the video, as does the lesser-known comedian Bill Irwin. YOU’VE JUST GOT TO WATCH … The clip, which got lots of airplay on MTV, plays up the comedic nature of the song, with lots of goofy hijynx, including a scene where McFerrin plays a distraught investor ready to jump out of a window. That part was ripped from the headlines: on October 19, 1987, the Dow Jones lost 508 points, shedding 22% of its value. In the video, McFerrin is holding a newspaper that reads “Dow Plummets 508 Points.”

Then just wait till you see the trio dancing …
Here’s a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note for note
Don’t worry, be happy
In every life we have some trouble
But when you worry you make it double
Don’t worry, be happy
Don’t worry, be happy now
don’t worry
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) be happy
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don’t worry, be happy
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don’t worry
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) be happy
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don’t worry, be happy
Ain’t got no place to lay your head
Somebody came and took your bed
Don’t worry, be happy
The landlord say your rent is late
He may have to litigate
Don’t worry, be happy
Oh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh don’t worry, be happy
Here I give you my phone number, when you worry, call me, I make you happy, don’t worry, be happy
Don’t worry, be happy
Ain’t got no cash, ain’t got no style
Ain’t got no gal to make you smile
Don’t worry, be happy
‘Cause when you worry your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down
So don’t worry, be happy
Don’t worry, be happy now
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don’t worry
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) be happy
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don’t worry, be happy
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don’t worry
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) be happy
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don’t worry, be happy
Now there, is this song I wrote
I hope you learned note for note
Like good little children, don’t worry, be happy
Now listen to what I said, in your life expect some trouble
When you worry you make it double
But don’t worry, be happy, be happy now
don’t worry
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) be happy
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don’t worry, be happy
don’t worry
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) be happy
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don’t worry, be happy
don’t worry, don’t worry
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don’t worry, don’t do it, be happy
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) put a smile in your face
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don’t bring everybody down like this
don’t worry
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) it will soon pass, whatever it is
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) don’t worry, be happy
(Ooh, ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh ooh oo-ooh) I’m not worried, I’m happy

This is a truly dreadful song, but I love it!

Laura I think it is a very peaceful song and the video is fun to watch, but it should have never reached #1. McFerrin played every Instrument on this song.

I love this so much! I think that it is a very pertinent song in the times that we are living in regardless of the situation that makes us stressed out. 🙂

Indeed the message is not upbeat but the music and the video are. A weird but humorous contraction.
